What is HART?

The Highway Addressable Remote Transducer or HART communication protocol is a de-facto industry standard that permits digital communication to be multiplexed with 4-20 mA analog signal wiring. The protocol also supports multi-drop networking of devices on a single twisted-pair cable. The use of HART protocol provides substantial cost savings in:

• Reduced wiring and terminations

• Maintenance

The HART communication protocol is an open standard owned and supported by the non-profit HART Communication Foundation. HCF is supported by more than 100 member companies who use this technology. Products that use the HART protocol to provide both analog 4–20 mA and digital signals provide flexibility not available with any other communication technology.
