OEE issues for process and continuous producers.
"How to Measure Manufacturing Performance"
"How to Calculate OEE for a Batch Process"
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
OEE measures the main variables of overall manufacturing effectiveness:
Process Availability
x Performance Efficiency
x Rate of Quality Output
= (OEE) %
Availability: The time a machine or process is in operation divided by scheduled or possible time.
Performance: The percent of capacity or speed used.
Rate of Quality: The percent of acceptable product produced.
Real time manufacturing OEE for batch and continuous process operations
You can expect Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) to measure and improve any part of your batch and continuous process operations in real time. You just shouldn’t expect a working and integrated OEE solution to arrive shrink-wrapped.
OEE measures what really matters for manufacturing companies: quality, throughput and yield. But for batch and continuous process operators, implementing a useful real-time manufacturing OEE system can be problematic.
First, you must have an idea of which factors determine your throughput, yield and quality. Second, you must consistently capture and record these meaningful inputs. And third, you must make the results available so your people can make adjustments when it matters.
One size is unlikely to fit all
Even within the same industry, company or plant, plant and production managers may focus on different ideas and inputs. In addition, whatever matters today is likely to be modified, improved, added to or de-emphasized soon.
You want operators to see and respond to performance data, engineers to monitor trends and implement improvements and managers to see see the status of your operations as they actually are and make better decisions.
In addition, you want OEE to be calculated and presented within the infrastructure already in place or by adding an infrastructure that serves all your Manufacturing Execution System (MES) needs. And if you must add plant information infrastructure, you want it to serve all your needs, not just performance measurement.
The solution? Build your batch or continuous process OEE system within a flexible overall MES platform.
Integrated real-time OEE/MES solutions
Integrating your OEE solution with your control, manufacturing execution and other systems increases the rewards of asset efficiency management. You want meaningful and real-time OEE data displayed in operator HMIs, not separate consoles or applications.
Currently proven plant information choices include OSIsoft PI, GE Fanuc Proficy, Rockwell Automation RSBizWare and others.
Integration can increase the complexity to implement OEE. Some OEE vendors attempt to market past this complexity by describing their services as ready-to-go product. If you examine the evidence, practically every batch and continuous OEE implementation requires custom integration.
Deep experience and resources enhance performance measurement
As one the largest independent process automation solutions and controls integrators in North America, RoviSys provides the real-time performance measurement expertise and services you need.
We can help you determine whether OEE can benefit your operations, evaluate the best platform for your situation and strategize, implement and integrate a practical and useful solution using the technology you prefer.
